This series has been lacking puzzles in dungeons lately, and this game only have a couple as well. Not too much branching save for a couple of dungeons. Some boring parts (like cave dungeons for example), but some attractive ones as well (like the reef field for example).Įxploration and field/dungeon gameplay is pretty linear in most parts. However, the variety and design of the fields and dungeons are leaps and bounds above every title since Vesperia. Trees and bushes still not fully 3D and such. Usual Tales style, doesn't really differ from its predecessor Zestiria. Add the Tales traditional skits to those, and this turns into the strongest point of the game in my opinion. Dyle and Kurogane as the 'comedy' duo, Moana searching and finding a new family, and others make this game great. The couple of side characters that we get in this game are also great. From Rokurou and Eizen teaching the young malak Laphicet about the ways of the world, to Velvet and Eleanor becoming close allies after initially starting on opposite sides, the interactions flow naturally as they gradually develop bonds with each other. That being said, the interaction of the characters are great. Each character got their own share of development within the story save for Magilou, who I feel is still underdeveloped as her sidequest didn't reveal much about her backstory and motives, unlike the other characters. The 6 main characters all have their own reasons to journey together, however by the end of the game they feel like a little family, which doesn't happen often with Tales games.

This is where the game shines in my opinion. A couple of big twists here and there but nothing too special. Progression of the story is similar to modern Tales games however, with it being divided to 3 main arcs and not much else to do in-between except for a couple of character-related sidequests which can be done before the final dungeon anyways.

The story turns into one with the focus of revenge and freedom as living beings. This one, while starting similarly, took quite a fast turn, with tragedy striking Velvet during the prologue. Most Tales stories start with good-natured protagonists which somehow embarks on a journey to safe the world. 60 hours later, I have to say this game is a pleasant surprise after the sub-par quality of a couple of the previous titles.Ī little bit of spoilers here and there, beware.
